A big well done to Carl Wicks getting a unanimous decision on his first fight.
A great result considering Carl's opponent had had one fight and a previous win.
A small group of Falmouth fight fans got a huge treat on Saturday (8th July) when a UFC Veteran and highly decorated, former heavyweight world kickboxing champion visited the town to hold a seminar at a local Muay Thai Boxing Club.
James McSweeney who has held 8 Muay Thai heavyweight world championship belts as well as fighting MMA in the UFC and taken part in reality show ‘The Ultimate Fighter’; ran the 4 hour seminar at Science of Eight (SO8) Muay Thai Club for 14 of it’s members. The seminar consisted of blending traditional Muay Thai Boxing techniques, which are already taught at the gym, with progressive fighting techniques incorporated in to James McSweeney’s very own ‘Sledgehammer’ style of fighting, which has seen him great success in his career
SO8 is a long established Muay Thai Boxing Club, and has seen great success competing locally for many years’ said Ian Davies, SO8’s founder and Head Instructor who has run the gym for over 25 years. ‘seminar’s like the one today allow our students to take inspiration from different styles and incorporate it into their own style of fighting, allowing them to be more unpredictable when they compete.
James took the participants through some of the key fundamental aspects of the sport including kicking, hand work and clinch work, all of which are vital to see success in the sport, as well as offering advice on conditioning and mindset.
Andrew Bennett, an instructor and member of SO8 organised the seminar having trained with James Thailand during a recent visit and invited him to run the training at the club. ‘Mcsweeney's credentials speak for them self. When I heard he was back in the U.K. For a brief visit I jumped at the chance to get him to come to SO8 Muay Thai gym in Falmouth to teach a seminar.’ said Andrew ‘We had 15 people attend on the day (myself included). Since the seminar I've had nothing but positive feedback from everyone saying what an eye opening experience it was and how they learned so much from him.’
After the seminar, Mr McSweeney took to social media to say ‘ a huge thank you to everyone at SO8 Gym for having me for a muay thai seminar. We sold out an intimate seminar focused on technique, mindset and conditioning. I love seeing students faces when I show the a technique they’ve never seen before.’ He added; ‘Great people, great to see the sport grow in this part of the country and I’m hoping to come back soon.’
SO8 Gym is based to the rear of Falmouth Sports Club on Western Terrace. It teaches Muay Thai Boxing for all levels and experiences as well as running fitness sessions based on these techniques.
Fight Success for Falmouth SO8 Muay Thai Ladies in Local Show
Two female fighters from Falmouth’s SO8 Thai Boxing Gym have come away with spectacular wins at the ‘tick tick boom’ Thai boxing show at Carn Brea Leisure Centre last Sunday, hosted by another local gym, Touchgloves in Hayle. Megan Armstrong and Rose Beattie both fought opponents from Swansea on the show, stopping their opponents and walking away with TKO wins.
Megan’s fight was her first experience in the ring, against an opponent Sophie Evans from Thai Impact Gym Swansea, who had fight experience and who had recently become a Welsh champion. Megan managed to stop her opponent in round three with a really impressive display of Thai Boxing, especially as she has only been training in the sport for a year.
Rose was fighting for the Anglo -Welsh title against another tough opponent, Rachel Evans from Pad Man Sam Gym in Swansea. Rose gave another great performance stopping her girl in round two, following a flurry of knees and punches.
‘It was a great day out for SO8 Gym and it’s supporters’ Said Ian Davies, Head coach at SO8 Gym. ‘The fighters did themselves, the club and travelling support proud. Thanks to all those who came to cheer them on and also to corner team of Al Beattie and Carl Wicks. These girls train so hard. A massive well done to you both’
